Bouillon Castle

Bouillon, Belgium

History

A large medieval fortress on a rocky spur above the Semois, with deep vaulted halls, dungeons and views over the town. Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven stone floors and steps.

Bouillon Castle (Château fort de Bouillon) stands on a rocky spur in a loop of the River Semois and is regarded as one of the most important medieval castles in Belgium. It is first mentioned in 988. To finance the First Crusade, Godfrey of Bouillon handed the castle over to Otbert, Bishop of Liège, in the mid-1090s. In the late 17th century Vauban had it adapted for heavy artillery.

On your visit you pass through thick walls, vaulted passages and narrow stairways past arrow slits, along with underground passages and courtyards. From the Austrian Tower the view stretches across the town and the valley. Depending on the tour, allow one to two hours. Wear sturdy shoes, as floors and steps are uneven. The castle is open seasonally, with longer hours in the summer months.
