Dinant Citadel

Dinant, Belgium

History

A fortress on a cliff above the Meuse, reached by a cable car or a long stair, with a view over the collegiate church and its onion-shaped spire. Park by the river and plan about an hour for the visit.

The citadel stands on a rock about 100 metres above the River Meuse. The site was fortified as early as the 11th century (mentioned in 1051); the present fortress dates from the early 19th century, when Dinant belonged to the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. From the top you look down on the Gothic collegiate church of Notre-Dame with its distinctive onion-shaped spire. Dinant is also the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone.

A staircase of 408 steps leads up from the collegiate church. The cable car, dating from 1956, has been out of service since October 2025 because of a brake defect and, according to press reports, could remain closed for about two more years (as of February 2026). There is a large car park at the top, so the citadel can also be reached by car. Allow about an hour for the visit.
