Bardejov Town Hall Square

Bardejov, Slovakia

History

A well-preserved medieval market square with a Renaissance town hall at its centre and the Gothic Basilica of St Giles at one end. The old fortifications are partly preserved, so walk the walls after the square.

Bardejov in eastern Slovakia was first mentioned in the 1240s and received royal town rights in 1376. In the Middle Ages the town had more than 50 guilds. Since 2000 the historic centre, together with the Jewish suburb, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The square is dominated by the Town Hall (built from 1505), which combines Gothic and Renaissance forms; on its edge stands the Basilica of St Giles, first mentioned in 1247.

The 14th- and 15th-century fortifications are among the best-preserved medieval defences in Slovakia. After the square, walk a little way along the walls. Allow two to three hours. About 2.5 km to the north lies the spa of Bardejovské Kúpele with an open-air museum of folk architecture. The square is best explored on foot.
