Levoča Old Town

Levoča, Slovakia

History

A walled medieval town square lined with Renaissance burgher houses, with the Gothic church of St James and its tall wooden altar at the centre. Park outside the walls and walk in; the church is best visited in the morning.

Levoča was first mentioned in 1249 and grew into a trading town with German settlers. The town is ringed by medieval defensive walls about 2.5 kilometres long and, since 2009, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Spiš Castle (inscribed in 1993). The large market square is surrounded by Renaissance houses, among them the former town hall, now a museum, and the Thurzo House.

St James's Church, dating from the 14th century, holds the high altar by Master Paul. At 18.6 metres it is regarded as the tallest late-Gothic wooden winged altar and was completed around 1510. In all, the church has ten altars from the 15th and 16th centuries. Allow two to three hours for a walk around the town. A museum devoted to Master Paul stands near the church.
