Bacharach

Bacharach, Germany

History

A half-timbered wine town on the Middle Rhine, with a medieval wall, watchtowers and steep lanes lined with old houses. Park outside the centre and climb up towards Stahleck castle above the town for the river view.

Bacharach lies on the left bank of the Rhine between Bingen and Boppard and has around 1,800 inhabitants. The town received its town rights in 1356 and was an important toll and wine-trading centre on the Rhine in the Middle Ages. The town wall was begun in 1344 and completed around 1400; it is among the best preserved in Rhineland-Palatinate. The renovated Postenturm tower serves as a viewpoint. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle, now a youth hostel; French troops destroyed it in 1689, and it was later rebuilt. The Wernerkapelle, a Gothic ruin, is a defining feature of the townscape.

The roughly 2.3-kilometre Stadtmauerrundweg (town wall circuit) leads through lanes of half-timbered houses and vineyards and along the fortifications; it has steep sections with steps, so sturdy footwear is advisable. The B9 runs along the Rhine, and a railway line follows the riverbank, so trains may be audible in town.
