Route description

Start in Omarama, fill the tank and drive the gravel Henburn Road to the Clay Cliffs, a short side trip with a small entry fee. Return to SH8 and drive about 45 kilometres to Twizel, the last town with a full supermarket and fuel before the mountains. Drive on the left and keep to 100 km/h limits; the long, straight roads of the Mackenzie Basin are known for sudden crosswinds.

From Twizel, take SH8 a short way and turn onto SH80, which runs about 55 kilometres along the shore of Lake Pukaki. Stop at the Lake Pukaki lookout for the turquoise water and your first view of Aoraki/Mount Cook. Glentanner Park Centre sits near the head of the lake. The road is sealed and wide but windy; there is no fuel in Mount Cook Village.

On the second day walk the Hooker Valley Track, about three hours return, and stop at the Tasman Glacier viewpoint on the way out. White Horse Hill Campsite is a DOC site at the track start; check fees and booking rules on the DOC website, and carry warm clothing. Freedom camping is not permitted in the national park, and facilities at the village are limited and often fully booked.

Leave the park by SH80 and SH8, returning past Twizel to Lake Tekapo, about 90 kilometres and roughly an hour. Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd early, then drive up to Mount John at dusk if you have booked a night tour. Camping in Tekapo is controlled, and self-contained vehicles must use signed sites. Check council rules before you arrive.
