Hardangerfjord and its waterfalls

Route description

Leave Bergen, with its wooden Bryggen wharf and the Fløibanen funicular, on road 7 east over the Kvamskogen plateau and down to Norheimsund on the Hardangerfjord. A few minutes before the village, Steinsdalsfossen is a waterfall with a path that runs behind the falling water.

Road 7 follows the northern shore of the fjord, with orchards on the slopes and steep mountains on both sides, then crosses the Hardanger Bridge towards Eidfjord. Fruit stands sell apples, cherries and juice in season, and the blossom in May is spectacular.

From Eidfjord, road 7 climbs up the Måbødalen towards the Hardangervidda plateau. Vøringsfossen drops 182 m into the gorge and can be seen from several viewing platforms and a staircase bridge above the chasm.

Return to the fjord and follow the Sørfjord south through the fruit-growing villages around Lofthus to Odda, the start of the Trolltunga hike. Many sections of this route run through tunnels, and the mountain part of road 7 can close in winter, so May to September is the best time.
