Route description
Start in Olsztyn, whose Gothic castle once housed Copernicus, then head north-east on country roads through Reszel to Święta Lipka. The Baroque basilica sits alone by a lake, and in summer its organ plays with moving angels and figures.
A few kilometres east, in the forest near Gierłoż, lie the ruins of the Wolf’s Lair, Hitler’s eastern headquarters. The shattered bunkers are sobering; follow the marked route and keep children on the paths.
Giżycko sits between the two biggest lakes, Niegocin and Mamry, with a swing bridge over the canal and the 19th-century Boyen fortress. The DK16 and smaller roads lead south to Mikołajki, Masuria’s sailing capital, where yachts crowd the harbour all summer.
The last stretch runs through the Piska Forest to Krutyń, where you can paddle a section of the Krutynia or be punted downstream, and ends at Ruciane-Nida between two lakes. Campsites are plentiful and often right on the water; mosquitoes are too, so bring repellent.
