Mecklenburg Lake District by motorhome

Route description

Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is known for its castle on an island in the lake; allow time for the gardens and the old town. Then take the B192 east through farmland and small villages.

Plau am See is a relaxed little town with a lift bridge and a castle tower, on the lake of the same name. Malchow has an old town on an island linked by a swing bridge, and a good organ museum in the former convent church.

Waren, on the northern shore of the Müritz, is the main base for boat trips and cycling. East of the lake, the Müritz National Park is a mosaic of woods, bogs and lakes where ospreys and cranes breed; it is best explored by bike from Federow or other access points.

Continue to Neustrelitz, a Baroque planned town, and south into Brandenburg to Rheinsberg Palace. The region is flat, uncrowded outside July and August, and made for motorhomes, with many campsites and pitches on the water; mosquitoes can be fierce on still summer evenings.
