Route description
Start in Rotterdam and head west to Hoek van Holland, where the Maeslantkering lies open on both banks of the ship channel. Then take the N57, the backbone of this trip, south over the Haringvliet and Brouwersdam barriers, with the North Sea on one side and sheltered water on the other.
On Schouwen-Duiveland turn east for Zierikzee, an old harbour town with towers and gates from its days of trade in salt and madder. Back on the N57 you cross the Oosterscheldekering; stop at Neeltje Jans to walk on the barrier and see the gates up close.
The road continues over the Veerse Gatdam to Walcheren. Veere is a tiny former port with a huge church and a marina, and Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland, has an abbey complex and a market square rebuilt after the war.
Finish at Westkapelle, where the lighthouse stands behind the highest dike on the coast and wide beaches run south towards Zoutelande. The whole area is flat and very popular with cyclists, so expect bikes everywhere; campsites near the beaches fill up in July and August.
