Route description
From Omaha, I-80 reaches Lincoln in about 45 minutes. The state capitol, with its tall tower and mosaics, is a short walk from the Haymarket district of old brick warehouses. Go up to the observation decks for a view of the city and the plains; tours are free. Lincoln also has the University of Nebraska State Museum, known for its fossil elephants.
Continue west on I-80 to Grand Island, about 150 km. From late February to early April, this part of the Platte River valley hosts the largest gathering of sandhill cranes in the world. The Crane Trust near Alda and Rowe Sanctuary near Gibbon run viewing blinds at sunrise and sunset; book these months ahead, dress warmly and keep quiet in the blinds.
Between Gibbon and Kearney, the Great Platte River Road Archway spans I-80 and tells the story of the westward trails. Kearney is a good base with many services and Fort Kearny State Historical Park to the south, a stop on the Oregon Trail. Outside crane season, the roads along the river are quiet and give good views of the braided channels.
From Kearney it is about 150 km on I-80 to North Platte, home of the Union Pacific Bailey Yard, the largest rail classification yard in the world, seen from the Golden Spike Tower. Visit Buffalo Bill Ranch on the north edge of town, open mainly in summer. The whole route is easy driving with plenty of fuel, although winds can be strong for high-sided vehicles.
