Route description
Leave Bucharest north on the A3 motorway and the DN1 towards Ploiești and the Prahova valley. Sinaia, about 125 km from the capital, is a mountain resort at the foot of the Bucegi. Peleș Castle, the summer palace of King Carol I, stands in the forest just above the town; it is closed on Mondays and visited on timed tours, so arrive early.
The DN1 up the Prahova valley is often slow with traffic, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, when people from Bucharest head to the mountains. From Bușteni, cable cars rise onto the Bucegi plateau. Cross the pass at Predeal and turn west to Râșnov, where a peasant citadel sits on the hill above the town. Bran Castle is only 12 km further on.
Brașov is a handsome old town under Mount Tâmpa, with the Black Church and the Council Square at its centre. East of the city, Prejmer has the largest fortified church in south-eastern Europe, ringed by thick walls lined with storage rooms where villagers kept food in times of siege. Then head north-west along the DN13 towards Sighișoara.
Turn off the DN13 at Buneşti for Viscri, a Saxon village of pastel houses around a white fortified church, listed by UNESCO. The side road is narrow, and livestock often walks home along the main street in the evening. Sighișoara, about 45 km further, has a walled medieval citadel with a clock tower. Romanian national roads need a rovinieta, bought online.
