Route description
Leave Žilina east on route 583 to Terchová, about 25 km, a village at the foot of Malá Fatra National Park and the birthplace of the outlaw Juraj Jánošík, remembered by a large statue above the village. Terchová has shops, fuel and several campsites, and makes a good base for two nights while you walk in the mountains around it.
Jánošíkove diery are a set of narrow limestone gorges climbed on ladders and footbridges beside waterfalls; start at Biely Potok and follow the loop, as the ladders are one-way. The next day, drive into the Vrátna valley and take the gondola up to the main ridge near Chleb, from where marked paths lead along the crest with views over the Váh valley and the Tatras.
From Terchová the road crosses the Zázrivá hills to Oravský Podzámok, about 45 km, where Orava Castle climbs up a cliff above the river in several stages. It was the setting for the 1922 silent film Nosferatu. Continue south on route 59 through Dolný Kubín towards Ružomberok, where a narrow side road climbs to Vlkolínec.
Vlkolínec is a UNESCO-listed village of log houses painted in pastel colours; leave the car at the car park below and walk up. Finish in Liptovský Mikuláš, about 30 km east, the base for the Low Tatras, the Demänovská caves and Liptovská Mara lake. Slovak motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette; the mountain roads on this route are free and fine for motorhomes.
