Route description
Leave Zakopane west towards Chochołów, about 20 km, a village of dark log houses near the Slovak border. From there head north-east via Czarny Dunajec to Nowy Targ and take the DW969 east. In Dębno, just off the road, the small larch church of St Michael the Archangel has a painted interior from the 15th century and is one of the UNESCO wooden churches of the region.
Carry on to the Czorsztyn reservoir, where two castles face each other across the water: the ruins of royal Czorsztyn on the north shore and Niedzica on the south, above the dam. You can walk across the dam between them or, in summer, cross by the small ferry. Both have short climbs and views across the lake to the Tatras on a clear day.
The Pieniny rise just east of the lake. Drive to Sromowce Niżne and hike to Trzy Korony, about 1.5 hours up, for the view down onto the loops of the Dunajec. From April to October, wooden rafts poled by highlanders in traditional dress float through the gorge from Sromowce Wyżne-Kąty to Szczawnica in about two hours, with buses back to the start.
End in Szczawnica, a spa town with a riverside promenade and a cycle path along the Dunajec. The DW969 is a good road, but the side roads around Sromowce are narrow, so leave large motorhomes in the paid car parks. Summer weekends are crowded; June and September are calmer, and the Pieniny National Park charges small fees on its main trails.
