Zoar Village State Memorial
Zoar, OH
A small village in eastern Ohio founded by German religious separatists, with preserved buildings and a formal garden at its center. Walk the lanes and combine it with a drive through the nearby Tuscarawas valley.
Zoar was founded in 1817 by German Radical Pietists who called themselves the Society of Separatists of Zoar. Under Joseph Bimeler, a pipemaker and teacher from Ulm, the community lived with shared property until 1898, when it dissolved. The Ohio and Erie Canal was vital to its survival: the Zoarites dug sections of it and used the payment to pay off their land debts. Today the village is a National Historic Landmark District, and the Zoar Village State Memorial operates ten restored buildings.
At the center is a communal garden whose layout was inspired by the imagery of the Book of Revelation. Allow two to three hours for a walk through the lanes and buildings. A drive through the nearby Tuscarawas Valley makes a good addition. Opening hours for the buildings are seasonal, so check them before you travel.
