Wallace Historic District
Wallace, ID
A silver-mining town squeezed into a narrow valley, with brick storefronts from the early 1900s lining the main street. Stroll the old streets and visit the mining museum; the drive in via I-90 is easy all year.
Wallace was founded in 1884 in the Silver Valley, when Colonel William R. Wallace built a cabin on the Coeur d’Alene River. The mining district is considered one of the richest silver districts in the world, with well over a billion ounces of silver produced. When a freeway was planned through the middle of town, residents successfully fought the demolition of historic buildings. Instead, Interstate 90 has passed over the town on an elevated viaduct since 1991; before that, Wallace had the last traffic light on I-90.
Today you can stroll the streets of the old town and visit one of the museums, such as the Wallace District Mining Museum or the Oasis Bordello Museum. Two to three hours are enough for the town. Getting here on I-90 is easy; the freeway runs above the town, so the old town is best explored on foot.
