Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum
Decorah, IA
A museum in the hills of northeast Iowa that preserves the story of Norwegian immigrants, with folk art, immigrant belongings and historic buildings. Allow time for the open-air section of old houses, and for a walk around Decorah's Norwegian-flavored downtown.
Vesterheim, Norwegian for "western home," was founded in 1877 as the Norwegian-American Historic Museum at Luther College and has been an independent nonprofit organization since 1965. It has carried its present name since 1991. The collection includes more than 33,000 objects. The main building on West Water Street is a historic hotel and publishing house.
Heritage Park, behind the main building, has twelve historic buildings. The museum also includes a folk art school, founded in 1967, with more than 100 classes a year, such as rosemaling and Hardanger embroidery. Allow two to three hours for the museum and the outdoor area, plus time for a stroll through downtown Decorah. The outdoor buildings depend on the weather, so a visit in summer or early fall is more pleasant.
