Valtice Château

Valtice, Czechia

History

A large Baroque château beside the main square of a wine town near the Austrian border, with formal courtyards and cellars devoted to local wine. Combine it with nearby Lednice and a stroll through the vineyards.

Valtice Chateau, close to the Austrian border, took its present form in the early 18th century to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, as a residence of the Princes of Liechtenstein. It is regarded as one of the most impressive Baroque residences in Central Europe and remained the family's main seat until 1939; after the Second World War it was confiscated. Together with Lednice Chateau it forms the Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996; a 7 km lime avenue links the two.

The chateau houses the National Wine Centre and the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic, a fitting home in a wine-growing region. The English-style park includes a neoclassical colonnade and the Temple of Diana of 1812, designed by Joseph Hardtmuth. Allow half a day for the chateau and park, or a full day if you add Lednice.
