Trümmelbach Falls
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
A series of glacier-fed waterfalls that thunder through a narrow rock gorge, reached by a tunnel lift and a stepped path. The spray soaks the walkways, so bring a rain jacket; the site is seasonal and closed in winter.
The Trümmelbach Falls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley consist of ten cascades inside the mountain, reached by stairs, bridges and a lift. Interlaken Tourism calls them the largest underground waterfalls in Europe. At high water, up to 20,000 litres per second thunder through the rock, especially during the snowmelt from April to June and the glacier melt from June to September. The gorge was opened up to visitors from the late 19th century.
Expect wet, slippery paths and wear sturdy footwear. The site is open seasonally, from April to early November (as of October 2026). It is not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, and children under four and dogs are not admitted. There is a self-service restaurant with a terrace on site. From Interlaken, the valley takes about 40 minutes to reach.
