Trogir Old Town

Trogir, Croatia

History

A small walled town on an islet joined to the mainland by a bridge, with Romanesque and Renaissance buildings and a cathedral with a carved portal. Park on the mainland side and walk in; mornings are the quietest.

Trogir lies on a small island in the channel between the mainland and the island of Čiovo, and bridges connect it to both sides. Greek colonists from the island of Vis founded the settlement in the 3rd century BC as Tragurion. Later it was ruled by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Habsburgs. The old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997; it has a rectangular street plan dating from Hellenistic times and buildings from the Romanesque to the Baroque.

The highlight is the Cathedral of St Lawrence, begun in the 13th century, with the portal by Master Radovan, regarded as the most important work of the Romanesque-Gothic style in Croatia. The Kamerlengo Fortress dates from the 15th century. Allow two to three hours, park on the mainland side and walk in. The quietest time is the morning.
