Toruń Old Town

Toruń, Poland

History

A Gothic old town on the Vistula, with brick town hall, red-roofed streets and the birthplace of Copernicus. Try the local gingerbread, walk the riverside wall and park outside the centre, as the old streets are narrow.

Toruń's Old Town on the Vistula has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, and the city is regarded as the birthplace of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Brick Gothic and the medieval fortifications, with gates such as the Brama Mostowa and the Brama Klasztorna, shape the townscape. On the Market Square stands the Gothic Town Hall with a tower about 40 m high and a viewing platform; St James's Church is a 14th-century Gothic basilica. The Leaning Tower (Krzywa Wieża), part of the 13th-century town defences, leans because it stands on clay ground.

The Gingerbread Museum, housed in a former confectionery factory, offers baking workshops; the ruins of the Teutonic Order castle date from the 13th century. The Bulwar Filadelfijski runs along the riverbank, with views of the town walls and the Vistula. Allow half a day to a full day for the Old Town. The lanes are narrow, so leave your vehicle outside the centre and go on foot.
