Tobermory

Tobermory, United Kingdom

History

A harbour town on the Isle of Mull with a seafront row of brightly painted houses, a small distillery and walks along the bay. Reach the island by car ferry from Oban, and book the crossing ahead in summer.

Tobermory was founded in 1788 as a fishing port by the British Fisheries Society, and the layout goes back to plans by the engineer Thomas Telford. The brightly painted houses along Main Street have made it a popular filming location, including for the BBC children's series Balamory. The town has a whisky distillery and the Mull Museum, which covers local history. Legend tells of a Spanish ship laden with gold that is said to have sunk in the bay around 1588; no significant treasure has ever been recovered.

Tobermory has about 1,000 inhabitants. Most visitors arrive by car ferry from Oban to Craignure, from where it is about 35 km (22 miles) across the island. Other ferries run from Tobermory to Kilchoan and from Fishnish to Lochaline; check timetables in advance. Book the crossing early for summer, and allow a few hours for the town.
