Terezín Memorial

Terezín, Czechia

History

A fortress town and memorial that served as a prison and ghetto in the Second World War, with a museum, cemetery and the Small Fortress. Allow a half day and approach the visit with respect; some exhibits are hard to see.

Terezín was founded in 1780 under Emperor Joseph II as a fortress town and named after his mother, Maria Theresa. In the Second World War, from 1941 to 1945, the town served as a ghetto, mainly for Jews from the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; the Small Fortress next to it was a Gestapo prison. The Nazis staged the ghetto as a "model ghetto" in order to deceive the public about the true conditions.

The memorial comprises several sites, including the Small Fortress with the National Cemetery, the Ghetto Museum, the Magdeburg Barracks, a prayer room, and the crematorium and Jewish cemetery. The town itself has remained largely unchanged since the ghetto period. Allow at least half a day and visit the sites with the quiet they deserve; some exhibitions are harrowing.
