Temple Square

Salt Lake City, UT

History

The walled central block of Salt Lake City, with the Temple, the domed Tabernacle and landscaped gardens. Visitors can walk the grounds and hear an organ recital in the Tabernacle; the temple itself is closed to non-members.

Temple Square covers about 10 acres (4 ha) in downtown Salt Lake City. Construction of the Salt Lake Temple began in 1853; it is the best-known temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Tabernacle was built in the 1860s and is home to the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. The Victorian Gothic Assembly Hall was built between 1877 and 1882. The temple has been undergoing a comprehensive renovation since late 2019.

The new Temple Square Visitors’ Center opened on May 18, 2026. The renovated temple is scheduled to open to visitors in April 2027, and tours will then require a free reservation (as of October 2026). Find out before your visit what is currently accessible. The grounds are easy to explore on foot; allow one to two hours. Otherwise the temple interior is open to members only.
