Teatro Antico di Taormina

Taormina, Italy

History

A Greek theatre rebuilt by the Romans, with a stage that frames Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea in a single view. Visit early or late in the day, as midday is hot and busy, and expect a steep walk up from the town car parks.

The Teatro Antico di Taormina dates from the 3rd century BC, when the town was still called Tauromenion. The Romans later rebuilt it, probably under Hadrian or Trajan, and in the 3rd century AD turned the orchestra into an arena. With a diameter of more than 100 m, it is the second-largest ancient theatre in Sicily after Syracuse. From the upper rows the view takes in Etna, the Ionian Sea and the coast of Calabria. In his "Italian Journey", Goethe called the place one of the most beautiful he had ever seen.

The theatre is still used as a stage today, for example for the Taormina Film Fest, concerts and opera. Allow about an hour for a visit. The town sits on a slope above the sea, so expect a climb on foot. Mornings and evenings are cooler and usually quieter than midday.
