Swiss Museum of Transport

Lucerne, Switzerland

History

A large museum on the shore of Lake Lucerne covering trains, cars, aircraft and ships, with many exhibits visitors can climb into. It works well as a rainy-day stop and has its own car park, so plan a few hours.

The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne opened in 1959 and covers transport by road, rail, water, air and space. Many of the vehicles, including cars, ships, trains and aircraft, are not just to look at: you can climb into some of them. According to Lucerne Tourism, it is the most visited museum in Switzerland. The site includes a film theatre with the largest cinema screen in Switzerland, a planetarium with an 18 m dome, the Swiss Chocolate Adventure and Media World with its interactive television studio.

Because much of the museum is under cover, it also suits bad weather. Allow several hours for a visit, or a full day with children. It is easy to reach by public transport and is open 365 days a year.
