A stretch of Adriatic coast where a high flysch cliff drops to a pebble shore and a path runs along the edge. Bring water in summer, as there is little shade, and step carefully near the unfenced cliff edge.
According to the tourist board, the Strunjan cliff, up to 80 metres high and about four kilometres long, is the highest flysch cliff on the Adriatic. It consists of soft flysch layers formed around 40 million years ago and continually eroded by wind, rain and waves. The cliff and a 200-metre-wide strip of sea in front of it form a strictly protected nature reserve within Strunjan Landscape Park, home to rare, protected species.
From the top edge you look out over the Gulf of Trieste, the salt pans, Moon Bay and Piran. You can reach the pebble beach at the foot of the cliff on foot from Strunjan or from Bele skale. In summer, take water with you as there is hardly any shade, and take care at the unfenced edge. Hiking, nature watching and photography are the most popular activities.
