Sopron Old Town

Sopron, Hungary

History

A compact medieval centre on the Austrian border, with a tall Fire Tower rising above the main square and its Gothic and Baroque houses. Climb the tower for the view and park outside the old centre before walking in.

Sopron lies on the Austrian border, about 70 km from Vienna. The Romans founded the town of Scarbantia here in the 2nd century, and Roman foundations and walls can still be seen. In 1277 Sopron became a free royal town; after the great fire of 1676 it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. The town is also famous for the Pan-European Picnic of 1989, when more than 600 East Germans fled to the West.

The old town preserves medieval, Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Its landmark is the 58-metre Fire Tower on the main square, with Roman foundations and a Baroque dome; nearly 200 steps lead up to the round balcony with its view. Allow two to three hours for a walk around. Park outside the centre and walk in. Sopron lies in a wine region producing reds and whites; signage is bilingual in Hungarian and German.
