Škofja Loka

Škofja Loka, Slovenia

History

A medieval town with a castle on the hill, a main square of painted facades and an old stone bridge over the Selška Sora. Walk up to the castle for the view and stay for coffee on the square.

Škofja Loka is a town of medieval character, known for its Passion Play and its well-preserved old town. The Škofja Loka Passion Play, written in 1721 by the Capuchin friar Romuald Marušič, is regarded as the oldest surviving play in the Slovene language and is staged only every six years; since 2016 it has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. The 14th-century Capuchin Bridge, a semicircular stone arch, is among the oldest structures of its kind in Central Europe. On the town square (Mestni trg) stands Homan House, with Gothic forms and a few Renaissance elements, now home to a café and patisserie.

The castle above the town, whose origins go back to the 13th century, houses the Loka Museum. The parish church of St James dates from the 15th century, and the Capuchin monastery library keeps the original manuscript of the Passion Play. About 45 minutes is enough for a walk through the old town; for a fuller visit including the castle and museum, allow at least two hours.
