History

A village in northern Indiana's Amish country where buggies share the roads with cars, and shops sell quilts, furniture and baked goods. Drive the quiet county roads nearby and allow extra time on market days.

Shipshewana lies in LaGrange County in northern Indiana and has about 840 residents (2020 census: 839). According to Wikipedia, the name goes back to a local Potawatomi man; there has been a post office since 1889. The region is a center of Amish and Mennonite life. The Menno-Hof Amish and Mennonite Museum in town presents the history of both groups and makes a good introduction before you look at the shops and the surrounding area.

Tourism is a major industry here. Expect horse-drawn buggies on the roads; drive slowly and keep your distance. Two to three hours are enough for the town and the museum, and drives along the quiet country roads nearby take more time. It is noticeably busier on market days and during events; check the current dates in advance and allow extra time for parking and access. If you travel by RV, arrive early.
