Schönbrunn Palace

Vienna, Austria

History

The former summer residence of the Habsburgs, with a long baroque façade, formal gardens and a hill crowned by the Gloriette. Book the palace interior ahead in high season, and save time to walk the park, which can be explored without a palace ticket.

Schönbrunn was the summer residence of the Habsburgs from the 18th century until 1918. Maria Theresa had the palace remodelled into its present form in the 1740s and 1750s; earlier designs were by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The palace has 1,441 rooms, including the 43 m long Great Gallery. The Gloriette has stood on the hill in the park since 1775. The zoo was founded in 1752, and the Orangery is 186 m long. The complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The park covers about 160 hectares, with a maze, the Neptune Fountain and the zoo; allow half a day to a full day to see the palace and gardens. Because of the heavy demand, the palace recommends booking tickets online in advance and warns of fake websites, so it is best to buy only through the official site. The park and the palace have their own opening hours, which are listed on the website.
