Santa Fe Plaza

Santa Fe, NM

History

The adobe-lined central square of one of the oldest capitals in the country, with the Palace of the Governors on its north side. Native artisans sell jewelry under the portal, and the surrounding streets are best explored on foot.

The Santa Fe Plaza covers about 2 acres (0.8 hectares) and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1960. On its north side stands the Palace of the Governors, built between 1610 and 1612 and regarded as the oldest public building in the United States. After Mexican independence in 1821, the plaza became the western terminus of the Santa Fe Trail, which linked New Mexico with Missouri. In the middle stands the Soldiers' Monument; its obelisk was toppled by protesters on October 12, 2020.

The plaza hosts the Fiestas de Santa Fe, the Spanish Market and the Santa Fe Indian Market, among other events; at Christmas, farolitos and lights decorate the trees. The center is best explored on foot; allow two to three hours for the plaza and its surroundings. Expect larger crowds during the big events.
