Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor, NY

History

A former whaling port on the East End with a working harbor, clapboard houses and small shops along Main Street. Park near the wharf and walk; it is much quieter outside July and August.

Sag Harbor was an important whaling port in the 19th century. In 1789 the village was designated a Port of Entry for the young United States, and its customs house is considered the nation's first. Whaling peaked in the 1840s and declined after petroleum was discovered in Pennsylvania. The Whaling Museum is housed in a Greek Revival mansion from 1845, and the historic village center is a protected historic district. John Steinbeck lived here from 1955 to 1968.

With fewer than 3,000 residents, the village is small enough for a one- to two-hour stroll along the harbor, Long Wharf and Main Street. Park near the harbor. Outside July and August it is much quieter.
