Rovinj Old Town

Rovinj, Croatia

History

A fishing town on a small peninsula, with steep cobbled lanes climbing to the church of St Euphemia and its bell tower above the harbour. Park outside the centre and walk in, then climb the tower for views over the rooftops and the sea.

Rovinj grew up on an island close to the coast, which was joined to the mainland only in 1763 when the channel was filled in. From 1283 to 1797 the town was ruled by the Republic of Venice, and its fortifications and town gates date from that period. The old town is largely pedestrianised, and the harbour is still an active fishing port; the Casa della Batana ecomuseum preserves the tradition of the batana boat.

On the hill in the old town stands the Baroque Church of St Euphemia, built from 1725 to 1736. Its bell tower is around 60 m high and was built earlier, in 1654 to 1680; a golden statue of the saint serves as a weather vane. The church holds the saint's relics in a Roman sarcophagus from the 6th century. Allow half a day for the lanes, the church and the harbour. Park on the edge of town and walk; in high summer it is best to come early or in the evening.
