Rocher de la Vierge
Biarritz, France
A rock topped by a statue, linked to the Biarritz seafront by a short iron footbridge. Come at sunset for the light over the Basque coast and the waves, and keep clear when the sea is rough.
The Rocher de la Vierge lies between the Port des Pêcheurs and the Port-Vieux and juts into the sea like a ship's bow. In 1865 a bronze statue of the Virgin was placed on it. Under Napoleon III the rock was pierced in the 19th century for a harbour project and, from 1863, linked to the shore by a wooden footbridge; the project failed because of cost and storm damage. In 1877 a metal footbridge replaced the wooden one; contrary to what is often claimed, it was not built by Gustave Eiffel but came from the Schryvers workshops.
The rock is freely accessible all year, day and night, although the footbridge may be closed in a storm or dangerous weather. From there you look over the Basque coast, the Pyrenees and the town; it is considered one of the best places for sunset. There is no parking on site; use the underground car park at Place Sainte-Eugénie.
