A walled wine village whose main street is lined with Renaissance houses and old gateways, with vines running right up to the ramparts. It is busy at midday in summer, so come early or late.
Riquewihr lies on the Alsace Wine Route. Its fortifications date from 1291, under the Lords of Horbourg, and in 1324 the village passed to the Counts of Württemberg. Its landmark is the Dolder, a 25 m high gate tower of pink Vosges sandstone and timber that now houses a local-history museum. The 16th-century Obertor has a rare wooden gate, one of the oldest still visible in France. The pentagonal Tour des Voleurs of 1550 houses a museum of torture. Renaissance half-timbered houses line the village.
The lanes are very busy in summer and at Christmas; arriving in the morning or evening, or staying overnight, makes for a quieter visit. Besides the towers, the museum in the former castle of the Counts of Württemberg and the Place des Trois-Églises are worth a look. The village was largely spared in the Second World War; its position in a dead end is said to be the reason.
