Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk

Rehoboth Beach, DE

Oddities

A classic Atlantic boardwalk with arcades, fries and ice cream, backed by a broad public beach. Weekday mornings avoid crowds, and parking is easiest in the side streets away from the center.

The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk is as old as the town itself: in 1873 the site was laid out as a Methodist camp meeting ground on 414 acres (about 167 hectares), and the oceanfront promenade was built the same year. The name Rehoboth comes from the Old Testament and means "broad spaces." Today the boardwalk is about 1.6 km (1 mile) long; it has been rebuilt several times after storm damage.

The town got a boost in 1925 with the paved road from Georgetown, after which many visitors came from Washington, D.C.; Rehoboth earned the nickname "Nation's Summer Capital." A stroll along the promenade and beach takes one to two hours. It is crowded in high season and on weekends; come early in the morning or on a weekday for a quieter visit. Allow some extra time to find parking.
