Puijo Tower

Kuopio, Finland

Views

A 75-metre tower on a hill above Kuopio, looking over the Kallavesi lake system and endless forest. Drive up or walk, go late in the day for the light, and check the weather first, as clouds can hide the view.

Puijo Tower stands on Puijo hill in Kuopio in eastern Finland. The 75 m tower was completed on 27 July 1963 and is the third tower on the site; earlier towers stood here in 1856 and 1906. It was the first tower with a revolving restaurant in the Nordic countries, which has 100 seats. The tower was the model for Näsinneula in Tampere, which opened in 1971.

From the top the view takes in central Kuopio and the Kallavesi lake district. Three ski-jumping hills lie to the west of the tower. Allow about one to two hours for a visit. In fog or low cloud visibility is limited, so check the weather forecast and current opening times beforehand.
