Praia da Marinha
Lagoa, Portugal
A small Algarve beach framed by golden limestone cliffs and sea stacks, with a clifftop path offering views over the arches. Go early in summer, as the car park fills quickly and the stairs to the sand are steep.
Praia da Marinha, near Lagoa, is the eastern starting point of the Seven Hanging Valleys, a coastal hiking trail in the Algarve. Golden limestone cliffs and sea stacks rise from the turquoise water around the beach. A staircase leads down to the sand. The trail from here to Praia do Vale de Centeanes is 5.7 kilometres long, so 11.4 kilometres there and back.
The car park is larger than at other beaches in the area, but in summer it is hard to find a space, so arrive early. A walk along the cliff path with views of the rock arches is worthwhile even without doing the hike. One to two hours is enough for the beach; allow half a day for the whole hike. Wear sturdy shoes because of the staircase, and do not go too close to the cliff edge.
