Plockton

Plockton, United Kingdom

History

A sheltered harbour village on Loch Carron, with whitewashed cottages along the shore and palm trees in the mild west-coast climate. Walk the waterfront in the evening light, and take a boat trip to see the seals.

Plockton lies sheltered on Loch Carron in Wester Ross. The village was laid out in the early 19th century as a planned fishing village, after sheep farming had arrived and people had been moved from Glen Garron. The North Atlantic Drift brings a mild climate in which even cabbage palms (Cordyline) thrive, giving the village a sub-tropical look. The television series Hamish Macbeth was filmed here, with Plockton standing in for the fictional Lochdubh.

An hour or two is enough for a stroll along the waterfront. Plockton has a railway station on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line; arriving by car means narrow Highland roads, so allow extra time and park on the edge of the village. The harbour is especially atmospheric in the evening and in summer, and quieter outside the main season.
