A medieval hilltop town near Lyon with cobbled lanes, stone houses and a market square built around an old linden tree. Come on a weekday or late afternoon to have the lanes mostly to yourself.
Pérouges lies about 35 minutes by car from Lyon on the A42. The medieval village was once shaped by weavers, and its stone houses line lanes such as the Rue du Prince and the Rue des Rondes. The upper gate (Porte d'en Haut) dates from the Middle Ages. At the centre is the Place du Tilleul, with a linden tree planted as a liberty tree after the Revolution. The Hostellerie du Vieux Pérouges stands here too. The preservation of the village is also due to the Comité de défense du Vieux Pérouges, which was set up with the support of Édouard Herriot.
A medieval festival takes place in June, and a Venetian parade is usually held in April. Try the Galette de Pérouges, a warm pastry with butter and caramelised sugar.
