Pernštejn Castle

Nedvědice, Czechia

History

A large Gothic castle on a rocky spur above the Svratka valley, with towers and courtyards that climb the hillside in several stages. Park in the village below and walk up; guided tours are the normal way to see the interior.

Pernštejn Castle stands on a high rock above the village of Nedvědice in Moravia, about 40 km north-west of Brno. Building began in the 13th century, and according to South Moravia Tourism the castle was never conquered in more than eight centuries. It is closely associated with the Pernštejn family, whose coat of arms shows a bison's head and who are described there as the richest and most influential family in the Czech lands. Later owners added Renaissance fortifications and Rococo elements such as the Chinese Pavilion.

Several tours are offered for different age groups, from courtyard walks for families with small children to detailed historical tours. Since 2020 there has also been a tour of the castle garden, with its Chinese pavilion, hermitage and Turkish bath. If you drive, the car park is about a 20-minute walk from the castle (as of October 2026); on foot or by bike you can climb up on marked paths from Nedvědice railway station.
