Pallastunturi
Muonio, Finland
A chain of rounded fells in Lapland, crossed by the long Hetta–Pallas trail, with a visitor centre at the Pallastunturi hotel area. Day walks on the open fells are rewarding in late summer and autumn colour; pack wind layers.
The Pallastunturi fells are part of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, whose first park area was established in 1938 and which was enlarged to its present form in 2005. At 1,020 km² it is Finland's third-largest national park and also its most visited (about 598,800 visits in 2024). The chain of fells stretches for roughly 100 km, and the highest peak is Taivaskero at 809 m. Open fells alternate with taiga, bogs and gorges.
The Hetta–Pallas Trail is regarded as Finland's oldest marked hiking trail (marked in 1934). Depending on the source it is about 50 to 55 km long and links Hetta with the Pallastunturi Visitor Centre; along the way there are huts and designated campsites. For day trips, sections around the visitor centre are a good choice. On the open fells you are exposed to the weather, so pack wind and rain protection. Autumn colours (ruska) and late summer are good times to go.
