Ostuni Old Town

Ostuni, Italy

History

The white town on three hills above the olive groves of Puglia, with whitewashed lanes, small arches and a Gothic cathedral at the top. Park below the walls and climb on foot, ideally in the late afternoon when the stone glows.

Ostuni, the "Città Bianca" or White City, stands on three hills in Puglia. The houses of the medieval old town are whitewashed; the lime was used for hygiene and reflects the light in the narrow lanes. The old town is a maze of winding alleys, stone arches and unexpected little squares. High above it all stands the Gothic cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its striking rose window. Old Aragonese walls recall the town's defensive history.

The heart of the town is Piazza della Libertà, with the obelisk of Saint Oronzo and plenty of places to eat and drink. The coast is only a few kilometres away, with beaches such as Costa Merlata, Rosa Marina and Monticelli, as well as the Torre Guaceto nature reserve.
