Orvieto Old Town and Duomo

Orvieto, Italy

History

A town on a tuff cliff above the Umbrian countryside, crowned by a cathedral with a richly decorated facade. Park at the base and take the funicular up, then walk to the Duomo and out to the cliff-edge streets.

Orvieto stands on a tufa plateau in the province of Terni, about 100 km north of Rome. The Etruscans already settled on this rock. A funicular railway takes visitors up to the old town. Work on the cathedral began in 1290, and the Sienese master builder Lorenzo Maitani shaped it until his death in 1330. The façade is adorned with golden mosaics showing scenes from the life of the Virgin and a rose window by Andrea di Cione. Inside, Luca Signorelli painted the Last Judgement in the San Brizio Chapel from 1499.

Beneath the town lies a network of more than 1,200 tunnels, caves, passages and cisterns, and guided tours offer a way in. The Pozzo di San Patrizio, a well commissioned by Pope Clement VII in 1527, is more than 50 m deep. Other sights include the Torre del Moro, which has a viewing platform.
