Nessebar Old Town
Nessebar, Bulgaria
A small peninsula town on the Black Sea joined to the mainland by a causeway, with ruined Byzantine churches and wooden-upper-storey houses. Park at the entrance and visit early or late to avoid crowds.
Nessebar began as a Thracian settlement (Menebria), which was settled by Dorian Greeks from Megara at the start of the 6th century BC and became known as Mesembria. The old town lies on a peninsula that is now joined to the mainland by a narrow, man-made isthmus. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. About forty churches survive from the early Christian, Byzantine, Bulgarian and Ottoman periods, the oldest dating from the 5th to 6th centuries.
The townscape is shaped by 19th-century timber houses and a wooden windmill at the entrance. After 1925 the town grew into a seaside resort. The old town is small and can be explored on foot in two to three hours; it is very busy in summer, so an early or late visit is worthwhile.
