Museo Egizio

Turin, Italy

History

The world's oldest museum devoted entirely to ancient Egypt, with statues, papyri and everyday objects in a large collection. The galleries are easy to follow, so allow two to three hours; use a car park outside the limited-traffic zone.

The Museo Egizio was founded in 1824, built around the collection of the consul Bernardino Drovetti. It is housed in the Palazzo dell'Accademia delle Scienze in the centre of Turin. The origins of the collection go back to 1630, when the Bembine Tablet of Isis arrived in Turin. Jean-François Champollion is said to have remarked that the road to Memphis and Thebes runs through Turin.

On twelve expeditions between 1900 and 1920, Ernesto Schiaparelli brought back further finds, including three intact tombs, among them that of Kha and Merit. Following the redevelopment completed in 2015, the museum displays more than 6,500 objects spanning some 7,000 years of Egyptian history. It is regarded as the world's second-largest collection of ancient Egyptian art after Cairo.
