Miltenberg

Miltenberg, Germany

History

A town on the Main river with a long, curved main street of half-timbered houses and a hilltop castle behind it. Look for the old market square near the fountain and park by the river before walking in.

Miltenberg lies in the Main quadrangle between the Spessart and Odenwald hills in Lower Franconia. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1226 and belonged to the Electorate of Mainz until 1803. Around AD 159/160 the Romans connected the Upper Germanic Limes to the River Main here. The old town, with many half-timbered houses, stretches along the main street and gathers around the market square, known as the Schnatterloch. Above it stands the medieval Mildenburg castle, which houses a museum.

Allow two to three hours for the old town and castle. The inn "Zum Riesen" is among the oldest inns in Germany. The old town is easy to explore on foot, and the town is also the starting point of the roughly 180-kilometre Main-Tauber Way of St James. Expect larger crowds during the Michaelismesse fair, held from late August to early September.
