Marblehead Old Town

Marblehead, MA

History

A crooked grid of colonial and Federal-era houses spilling down to a busy sailing harbor. Park outside the center and walk the narrow lanes to Crocker Park for the view over the moorings; summer weekends are crowded.

Marblehead was settled in 1629 by fishermen as part of Salem and became a separate town in 1649. The Old Town preserves narrow, winding lanes from its days as a fishing village; before the Revolution the town was a major shipbuilding and fishing port in Massachusetts. Sights include the Old Town House of 1727, Abbot Hall of 1876 with the painting "The Spirit of '76", and Fort Sewall, which dates back to 1644 and overlooks the harbor. The town calls itself the "Birthplace of the American Navy", a title that neighboring Beverly also claims.

Much of the Old Town lies within the Marblehead Historic District. It is best explored on foot; allow two to three hours. Crocker Park, a gift to the town from Uriel Crocker, has views over the harbor. The streets are narrow, so park on the edge of the Old Town and, if possible, avoid summer weekends.
