Litchfield Green
Litchfield, CT
A wide, tree-shaded town green framed by white colonial houses and a classic New England church. Stroll the historic district, then drive the country roads to the surrounding farms; autumn foliage is the busiest season.
Litchfield Green was laid out in 1720 as a common pasture; the first meetinghouse stood here in 1723 and the courthouse in 1751. From 1836 it was remodeled into a park. The Litchfield Historic District has been a National Historic Landmark since 1968 and is regarded as a well-preserved example of a late 18th-century New England village. Georgian architecture predominates, and the church on the green dates from 1829. The Green lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 202 and Route 63.
On South Street stands the Tapping Reeve House with the Litchfield Law School, which operated from 1774 and is regarded as the first law school in the United States; Aaron Burr and John C. Calhoun studied there. Sheldon Tavern is on North Street. A walk around the town center can be done in one to two hours. The town of Litchfield has existed since 1719.
